The word quattro is derived from the Italian word for "four" to represent the car's four-wheel-drive system. The Audi Quattro was the first rally car to take advantage of the changed rules that allowed the use of four-wheel drive in competition racing. The car won rally competitions for the next two years. Audi revolutionised rallying with the Quattro. At the time rally tracks were mostly gravel which gave the Audi Quattro’s four-wheel-drive system a natural advantage.
