The Countach was designed around the existing Lamborghini V12 engine in a mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. Unlike the Miura's transversely-mounted engine, the Countach had it longitudinally mounted. Lamborghini was the first with this layout in a mass-produced sports car.
