Boost or Turbo lag is the time it takes for the turbocharger to spool up and establish air pressure to the intake manifold. It's the delay between when you hit the throttle and when the turbo begins delivering boost. The first turbocharged cars in the '70s had big boost lags, which delayed peak power by over 1 second and in some cases, the turbo took even longer to spool up. Back in the 70’s when the first turbocharged sports cars were released (BMW 2002 Turbo, Porsche 911 Turbo, Saab 99 Turbo), boost lag was a big problem and driving these cars required skill and experience. Sometimes, it even killed its driver. The Porsche 930 was notorious for its boost lag and the car has killed many of its owners. It’s been nicknamed “Widowmaker” due to its dangerous handling characteristics.
