The VW Beetle was first officially named the Type 1. The car was imagined by the German Reich who wanted a cheap and affordable car for the people. The task was handed to Ferdinand Porsche who designed and developed the first prototype in 1938.

The VW Type 2, known as the Transporter, Bus (US), Camper (UK) or Bulli (Germany), was a light commercial vehicle introduced in 1950 by VW as its second car model. It was derived from the Type 1 (Beetle) and was given the factory designation Type 2.
Only in 1968, the Beetle was officially renamed by Volkswagen. Between 1938 and 2003 VW built 21.5M Beetles and 13M Bullis making them the most successful cars in the world.
